ABOUT US
For some, winemaking is a legacy. For Roger Beery, his late wife, Donna, and their children, it is a calling. They are a family from Austin, Texas and Colorado who were drawn to northern Sonoma County for different reasons. Their son, Conch, studied winemaking and settled here after traveling the world to learn his craft. Their daughter, Whitney, came to California to build a career in wine hospitality. Roger and Donna followed what they called their Wine-Stained Dream: a passion for Pinot Noir that turned them into wine writers, and then, eventually, winemakers. Each of them came to California seeking something different, but shared a mutual respect for honesty and integrity in winemaking. Roger, Conch and Whitney decided to combine their training and talents to craft J. Cage wines. They are the Beery family. Two Generations…One Passion…Crafting authentic, compelling wines.
A WINERY FOR THE GENERATIONS
“It is with gratitude, that our family has been able to follow our shared passion, that we call the Wine-Stained Dream. Working together to create a winery for the generations, dedicated to the finest hand crafted wines, is both exhilarating and rewarding. Each time we share J. Cage wines, it is apparent that the reality has become even better than the dream itself.”
—Roger Beery, Proprietor
A CRAFT
At J. Cage Cellars, we create handcrafted wines in small lots. Our philosophy is traditional and non-interventionist. Winemaking begins in the vineyard and our winegrower partners are some of the most respected in Sonoma County. We believe that great vineyards are like great voices. We seek out the sites that deserve to sing solo, and we practice balance and restraint in the cellar to allow our unique vineyards to be heard. We build lasting relationships with winegrowers so that we can continue to listen to each vineyard as it matures over time. Conch, our young winemaker, has over ten wine harvests under his belt, honing his craft at such notable California and international wineries as Hunnicutt, Kim Crawford, Gundlach Bundschu and Kosta Browne. Together with consulting winemaker Adam Lee of Siduri, we have developed the celebrated J. Cage style that is sought by wine enthusiasts across the country.
Sustainability is a part of who we are. Our vinetenders partners are stewards of the land. We employ eco-friendly winery practices. And our packaging is humble, for the sake of the planet. We use lightweight eco-glass bottles to reduce our carbon footprint. We refrain from using foil closures as we do not wish to support dirty tin-mining operations. Our recyclable corks are harvested from sustainable Portuguese forests and are fully traceable back to their forest of origin.

A FAMILY LEGACY: Who Was J. Cage?
J. Frank Cage was a craftsman, a builder and an avid outdoorsman who hunted and fished throughout the Texas Hill Country. He designed and built Austin’s historic Lamar Boulevard Bridge, noted for its Art Deco-style open-spandrel architecture and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. He was Roger’s great grandfather.
It might seem unlikely that a family from Austin named “Beery” would go into winemaking in northern California. But it was meant to be. Since we launched J. Cage Cellars, we have been reunited with members of the extended Cage family. We are inspired by J. Frank Cage’s commitment to craftsmanship and we are indebted to the legacy he left to us.
